Ensure your mussels are of a New Zealand, licensed, marine farm (aquaculture) origin. Some suppliers dredge feral mussels from the sea bed where they are more likely to accumulate heavy metals and be mixed with other varieties of mussel. Although dredged mussel are of the Perna canaliculus species they have not been farmed and are therefore not able to be called Greenshell or Green Lipped. Species of mussel other than Perna canaliculus have no proven anti-inflammatory activity.
